Alberobello  the only town in the world where there are trullis!  

Placed between two hills, Alberobello welcomes visitors from all over the world, with all its fascinating features of the trulli village. It is subdivided in two clusters (“Rioni”): Monti and Aia Piccola, both National monuments and since 1996 recognized from the UNESCO World-Wide Heritage of the Humanity.

The term trullo derives from the latin word turris or trulla or from the greek tholos, all terms that means cupola. The trulli are usually characterized by a quadrangular base (with walls that go from a thickness of 80 cm until 270 cm of the Trullo Sovrano), covered from cone and built with dry stones without use of mortar.

It is a very particular structure that dates back to ancient times (Greek, Sardinian “nuraghe”, Micenee tombs). These structures were originally built without mortar, this was to avoid paying tax, if the tax man was about on inspection, they would remove the key stone above the door and the whole trullo would collapse. And when the tax man had gone, they would simply rebuild the trullo again. Special craftsman still build the trullo today, but they are built with mortar.

The trulli have on their top decorated elements that close the cone: the pinnacoli. They are usually carved in stone and represent the signature of the Master “trullaro” building up the trullo. There are various interpretations on the meaning of symbols painted on the stones forming trulli. Not only decorative ones, not only pagans. Each symbol, as stated by historical studies, have a Christian root that moves and changes from ancient times following the popular religion moods and assuming therefore a wishing-well to push away the misfortune. Each symbol had origins tied to pre-Christian, Solar, Jewish or Pagan cults. These symbols are painted by free hand using lime. Lime is also used for external and internal whitening of the trulli.
