Pozzuoli, hometown of Sofia Loren, is a beautiful old town full of charm and character, situated on the West coast of the Neapolitan Riviera in the Gulf of Pozzuoli, in fact - A SECRET NEIGHBOUR TO NAPLES - close to the Islands of Ischia and Procida, looking across to Capri. Pozzuoli was founded in 530 BC. It was then renowned as an important trading and military port, today it is still a busy little port
Pozzuoli is not a known resort to the foreign tourist, but it is a well loved resort by the Italians. Here you can live amongst the locals and see their way of life, feel the culture of the South and the warmth of their hospitality as tourists are really welcomed here. This is an area for those who want to get away from the highly touristic places such as Sorrento. Pozzuoli is unspoilt by tourism and as it is predominantly Italian where you can experience a true taste of Italy!
This is a beautiful part of Southern Italy, an amazing area with a wealth of history and archaeology at your fingertips. Not only was Pozzuoli the first Port to the Roman Empire, it also boasts stunning scenery, sandy beaches, beautiful lakes and wonderful walks. Your true "taste of Italy" does mean your true taste of Southern Italian food as well. This is a Gourmets paradise with a wealth of local, fresh produce that is used seasonally and the prices are hard to beat. It is also in a great location that is ideal for all excursions on this fantastic coastline. Visit Pompeii, Herculaneum and Mount Vesuvio to see and feel the history around you. There is even easy access to the city of Naples and Rome, both of which are wonderful historically and, of course, offer a wealth of shopping opportunities.
The area of Pozzuoli offers accommodation away from the hustle and bustle of the larger cities but allows you to indulge in city life before returning to the calm and beauty of this magnificent area.
Public transport
Pozzuoli has good public transport, which is cheap and a good means to get around with
good links in to Naples.
Metropolitan train line - this runs from Pozzuoli direct to Pizza Garibaldi in Naples
Cumana Railway - this is the coastal line that also runs from Pozzuoli direct in to Montesanto Station in Naples and these routes take approximately 25 minutes.
Buses - these run from around the Gulf of Pozzuoli right into Naples.
During the Spring and Summer months run the hydrofoil boats from the Ports of Bacoli and Pozzuoli linking you to Sorrento and the Amalfi Coastline.

 

 

Easy access to Naples, Vesuvio, Pompei, Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano and to top it all, a gourmets paradise. It is exciting, relaxing, romantic, geographically in a good position; in fact, it is what you want it to be!

 

 

 
Pozzuoli boasts the u3rd Largest Amphitheatre in Italy uCastle of Baia uThe Archaeological Park - where the Emperors spent their leisure time and where Nero had his mother Agrippina murdered uCumae & Sybil's Cave, first Greek settlement.

It is inexpensive to go to these four main archaeological sites, cost is 4 Euro per person for the four sites and you can take your time to see everything because access to the sites are spread over a 2 day period. Children, students and people over 65 are FREE. You buy your ticket at the entrance to the first site of your choice, keeping your ticket and producing it on entry to the other 3 sites, it really is exceptional value.

 
   
 
  There are lots of restaurants, seafood, pizzeria, trattoria, all at affordable prices. On the other side of the port is the picturesque marina. As you walk through the town you come to the Lungo Mare (sea promenade), it is lovely to stroll along here looking out to Capri and Sorrento in the distance. Pozzuoli, it is a beautiful old town, with lots of history attached and well worth exploring!
 
     
 
 

Cumana Railway This is the local train that runs along the northern coastline called the Cumana Railway. It links all the little towns around the bay together, making easy access direct to Naples.

 Temple of Venus - Port Julius now the submerged military port that was built in honour of Julis
Caesar, can be seen by the glass bottom boat even better if you love scuba diving as guided tours are available - Rione Terra a town upon a town, below is the oldest nucleus of the Greek town with
streets dating back to 194BC with the Roman town built on top - Monte Nuovo the youngest mountain
in Europe, formed after a volcanic eruption on 29th September 1538. The sites are endless! 
Naples is also a wonderful city to be explored and is easily reached by the Cumana Railway,
Metro Line and buses from Pozzuoli, making here an ideal place (also great for a City Break)
if you do not want to stay in the busy City of Naples.
If you have a week or two, you still won't have enough time to see everything and will want to return!
